Northern Pike, Lake Trout and Arctic Grayling are the target species at Selwyn. June - Arctic Grayling are slow early in the season. They are moving into the fast running streams and are easily spooked. Northern Pike are in spawn and are very active. Catch ratios per day are very high. Fly-fishing for Northern Pike is exceptional. Lake Trout are feeding in shallow water along reefs and rocky shore lines throughout the lake. Catch ratios are at approximately 20 to 40 fish per guest per day, at random weights topping out at 20 to 32lbs. July - Arctic Grayling increase their activity (catch ratio) through the end of July and into August. Northern's are abundant in early July, averaging 15 to 30 per guest per day. By the middle of July and into August the Northern Pike fishing will drop off in catch ratio per guest as the Northern Pike spread out around the lake and move into a variety of depths. Lake Trout are still slow in early July as they move from shallow to deeper water throughout the month. By the end of July Lake Trout begin to find their summer depth and catch ratios move up to approximately 20 fish per guest per day. August - Grayling are still good, however, trophy class are rare even at the best time of the year. Northern's slow down, averaging 10 fish per guest per day. Lake Trout are at their maximum depth (over 100 feet) and can be caught as frequently as 50 fish per guest per day. Trophy fish in the 20 and 30 pound range are most common at this time of the year. If you are not catching fish over thirty pounds, chances are your neighbors at dinner that night have been. Calm Water Fishing - Selwyn Lake is the shape of a hand with fingers spread out. There are only two large open areas where waves can prevent you from safely traveling in the worst weather. You can expect to fish in calm water every day if you want. The long fingers of lake will block the wind depending on wind direction and the area your guide takes you. Honest communication with the Camp Manager and your guide will ensure you stay in calm water during the rare days of inclement weather at Selwyn.
